Portugal

A holiday to Portugal can be many things, it can be a sun soaked river cruise up the Douro enjoying the medieval history and cultural delights. It could be a family escape to the Algarve for some fun in the sun. It could be a city break to Lisbon to enjoy the culinary delights.

A sun soaked country sitting on the western edge of Europe, with a bountiful coastline providing some of the most dramatic scenery, unique dishes and world-class hiking options. The Algarve is geared up perfectly for sun seekers, families and of course golfers. The south coast is filled with accommodation options from the basic self-catering to the ultra-luxury resorts.

Travel north and you will see the landscape change, and you’ll experience the real Portugal. Lisbon is great for a small city getaway while the Douro Valley with its vineyards is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Garden Island

An island governed by the Portuguese, but has its own flavour and culture. Here you’ll find active and outdoor holidays with a cosmopolitan twist. The lush island takes its nickname from the spectacular gardens, while the mountain scenery makes it ideal for hikers. Head to Funchal the island’s capital for chic bars and boutiques.

What to do

Algarve. A holiday favourite, offering sandy beaches and sleepy villages, to modern resorts and exciting nightlife.
Lisbon. Explore charming back streets, incredible architecture, fascinating culture and world-class dining.
Mess about on the river Douro, take a river cruise along one of Europe’s most famous rivers with almost guaranteed sunshine.
Visit Evora. There is the Roman Temple of Évora (also called the Temple of Diana). Nearby, whitewashed houses surround the Cathedral of Évora, a massive Gothic structure begun in the 12th century.

When to go

Endless sunshine seems to be order of the day across the whole of Portugal in summer, certainly between June and September. In July and August the coastal resorts are at their busiest and prices are at their peak. It’s too hot at this time to do any serious sightseeing or hiking. Its best to come in May and October if you plan on exploring the the cities, towns and archaeological sites. Most of the rain falls in winter between November and March. In spring, dazzling flowers carpet the hillsides and almond blossoms light up the countryside. October enjoys warm weather without it being too hot and the sea is still warm too.
