Morocco

A North African land, Morocco has breathtaking views, is known for its heat from the west Sahara desert to the Atlas mountains. A holiday to Morocco is typified with souk-filled cities, chilled out beaches, luxury resorts and a more than generous helping of sunshine.

Less than 4 hours away from the UK, but Morocco couldn’t feel more different. This exotic land of snake charmers in busy souk markets, camels strolling down the beach and chaotic and maze like city streets. Marrakech is the big city here, a rabbit warren of souks surround the main centre square and the Atlas mountains are a day trip away. Over on the Atlantic coast, Agadir has a 10km stretch of sand, a crumbling Kasbah and a lively marina to shout about. For a more chilled out vibe, Essaouira has an artsy medina and a beach that’s great for windsurfers.

The heat, the beach resorts and the hectic cities don’t generally catar too well for families with young children. We’d recommend Morocco more for couples looking for luxury in the soon or adventure travel to the Atlantic beach resorts. The cities are exotic and chaotic which could make parents a little nervous when travelling with young ones.

What to do

Head to Agadir for wind- and kite-surfing are the two big favourites, thanks to trade winds coming off the Atlantic. And just behind the sands you’ve got seafood stalls churning out ocean-fresh sardines.
Visit the souks stacked with spices. Mosques with towering minarets. And street scenes starring acrobats and snake-charmers. Marrakech – AKA the Red City.
Bounce and slide your way through the desert. A camel or a 4×4 – they’re both seriously fun ways to explore Morocco’s sweeping sand dunes and sleepy oases

When to go

Morocco is a good bet all year round if you’re looking for sun. In July, in Marrakech temperatures peak at just under 40°C. Either side of summer, days are milder – think 22°C to 28°C. And in winter, temperatures sit in the high teens. You’ll see a bit more rain from November through to March, but it’s usually just the odd showery day here and there.
