Vietnam

From the pancake-flat rice fields to the imposing rainforest topped limestone cliffs of Halong Bay, Vietnam is a country of breathtaking beauty. The natural scenery is exotic and utterly compelling. The heritage and the country’s metropolises are alluring. The country is easier to move around than ever before, with upgraded roads and new hotels. The entrepreneurial spirit of the people is alive and well as the number of visitors soars every year.

As the country is in a period of immense flux it makes it a very exciting time to visit. The cities and towns offer a spectrum of contrasts. From french colonial houses to Chinese temples and chaotic markets to designer boutiques. The attractive coastal cities Hue and Hoi boast tranquil rivers and striking architecture. In the south, the high octane city of Ho Chi Minh is more like Bangkok and Singapore. Hanoi is steeped in moments from the past, with the Old Quarter’s, narrow streets and temples to explore.

The beaches are typically in the south of the country, and if you’re taking a tour, make sure to plan a few days to settle and relax on the sugar-white sandy havens. While the dramatic Halong Bay is on many bucket lists, catch it at sunrise and you’ll be rewarded with mist and mystery.

Unforgettable experiences are everywhere in Vietnam, for the adventurous traveller, there are tours, escorted or not. For the honeymooners there are some of the most exclusive, completely secluded luxury resorts. With a country so bountiful in sightseeing gems, you’ll want to save the rest and the luxury until the end of your holiday.

What to do

Cruise on a traditional junk through UNESCO World Heritage area Halong Bay.
Eat – Nothing comes close to Vietnamese food, subtle in flavour but outstanding in diversity. Up and down the country mingle with the locals and sample local dishes and rice wine.
Head to the south the Mekong Delta, home to much of the country’s agriculture, with exotic fruits grown among the arms of the delta and vast quantities of rice on a patchwork of paddocks that quilt the plains

When to go

The best time to visit Vietnam is in Spring (February to April) and autumn (August to October). This is when the temperature is more moderate and there is less rainfall. No matter where in the country you travel March and April has the least amount of rainfall.
