Tourism is fairly new to Myanmar (Burma), and its isolation from western influences makes this a land like none you’ll ever see. People are returning to their country in their droves to bring it into the 21st century. All the while preserving the wonders of their past for the rest of the world to enjoy.
For all the huge changes you’ll find traditions aplenty from over 100 ethnic groups that call Myanmar home. Tourism is now encouraged so you can discover this beautifully preserved country. There never been a better time to join an escorted tour or luxury river cruise to see it all for yourself.
If you love the immersive holiday experience you’ll love Myanmar, unspoiled and with very little tourism, it will satisfy the most intrepid traveller. If you prefer a more luxurious experience, a river cruise up the Ayeyarwady is ideal. A great alternative is a cruise with Myanmar on the itinerary, it’s a must-see stop on a Far East cruise!
What to do
Drift down the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River in an old river steamer or luxury cruiser.
Stake out a slice of beach on the blissful Bay of Bengal.
Trek through pine forests to minority villages scattered across the Shan Hills without jostling with scores of fellow travellers.
Float high above Bagan, with over 2,000 pagodas and temples spread out over the plains as far as the eye can see.
When to go
The summer months can be very wet in Myanmar, so the best time to visit is October to May in order to avoid the rain. The year is essentially split into three seasons. The monsoons are May to October, the dry season from November and the hot season from February until May. We suggest visiting between November and February when it is dry and a little cooler.
